It is. And I have gotten to appreciate it more and more over the years. Early on it is easy to dismiss design as costly and cumbersome (to get right), but they you realize how integral it is to success as a business.
I don't think age is a disadvantage in the future of work. I think job at risk are based on whether they can be automated (think telemarketing, accountancy, etc.). Experience is always an asset, if combined with staying current on technology.

Yes, frequently. But when you love what you do, when you have flexibility during the 'regular' week, and when you can work around schedules so you do not sacrifice family time it's ok.
