What makes or breaks a leader is whether or not they are truly in it for others versus those who are only in it for themselves. The leaders who are driven by ego instead of collaboration don't succeed in the end.
Being a team member and not a boss
One word: HUMILITY
A leader needs to be able to accept that sometimes they will be wrong and sometimes they won't know all the answers. This brings openness, collaboration, respect and strength in one's abilities.
A leader cares about others. A true leader is selfless, not selfish. He doesn’t drive others to make himself look good. He doesn’t take credit for everything, even if he deserves it. He is looking to contribute, not to be rewarded or recognized.

Empathy. It should work in all directions, but it is too often lost when people reach leadership roles. Leaders should be able to understand the situation of even their most junior team members, to help create a positive environment and team morale.
A clear and compelling vision of a possible future state, and the ability to communicate that vision in a way that inspires.
I call myself a story finder. I do content strategy and communications strategy, and I deliver many different things: social media plans, content pipelines, ghostwritten articles, LinkedIn consultation, workshops, and lotsa copy.
Having a strong Theory of Mind. If you can really understand how someone else thinks--their logic, their assumptions, their irrational motivations (which we all have in spades), then you have a much greater ability to persuade and build consensus.
