By mindmapping, outlining, doodling and reading different resources to validate my ideas. Ideation is my favorite step in any project.

When I'm really stuck I do a bullet list brainstorm. There's this playwriting exercise I learned in a workshop once called "there are stories about," where you fill in the blanks with the first things that come to mind, and I swear by it.

It's magic and different every time. Ideas just 'pop out of nowhere'. Or from using someone else's site or program. Being observant, listening for pain and problems. When I see a problem, my natural instinct is to solve it - and ideas just flow.

As my team will tell you, i LOVE a whiteboard. Draw it up, rub it out, draw it again. Write notes as you go. Instructions, flow, questions, rules, whatever. Get it out of your head onto something that brings the picture to life.
